So, it all kind of started when I was nothing more than an embryo. I came into the world, surrounded by music of all kinds. I was born in 1960, so I was hearing everything from Sinatra to Elvis, Ella to The Supreme's, Janis and Hendrix, with the kinks & Cash mixed in. There was doo wap, big band, hillbilly and British rock, blues, soul, R&B & folk. It was a crazy time in music and to make it all the more interesting, my grandfather played banjo, ukulele, piano, guitar and some other stringed instrument that I never did find out what it was called. Some stringed thing from an Island I'd never heard of.....which made it even cooler. Now my Dad was an interesting bloke as well. His forte on the musical horizon was concertina, guitar and a harmonica . He was good at all of 'em, but excelled in both the concertina and harmonica. All the women in my family sang and my Grandfather who we called Pop-pop was hands down the most entertaining human being that ever walked the earth. Clearly from my description here, I was in awe most of the times he ever opened his mouth. My Grandma sang like an angel with a warmth and softness in her voice that would make the hardest of metal heads bow gracefully and back away. I was lucky. Luckier then than anyone who had ever lived. The family was big, we all loved each other, we craved the next time we got to see cousins, and grandparents and aunts and uncles. Never had there been such a lucky girl.
My Dad took us to Mexico. We rented a house on the beach. We liked it so much we came back and camped out on the beach right next to the condo we had just rented the week before. We rode horses out into the ocean and played music at night by the campfire. It was glorious. There was so much beauty and warmth, it was magical. This is where I got my first guitar. Hanging out in Mexico, on the beach, when I guy walks by selling guitars. My Dad asked me if I wanted one and I jumped at the chance. I said yes, he bought it for maybe $30 and I had my very first treasure...musical treasure.
